STUDENT SERVICES
Directions
The Raritan Valley Community College campus lies at the crossroads of Central
New Jersey, with routes 22, 202, and 206 and Interstates 287 and 78 just minutes
away. The College is situated on the north side of Route 28 in North Branch.
From New Jersey Turnpike: Take the NJ Turnpike to Exit 10. After toll, bear left, exit onto Interstate 287. Exit left onto Route 22 West. After approximately 7 miles, exit onto Orr Drive. At the end of Orr Drive, turn left and make the first right into the College.
From Garden State Parkway South (from North Jersey): Take Exit 142 to 78 West. Continue on 78 West to Exit 26. Turn left onto Lamington Road. Proceed approximately 2 miles. College entrance will be on the left. Follow signs to Parking Lot #1.
From Garden State Parkway North (from the shore area): Exit at 127 – Interstate 287 North. Proceed on 287 North to the Route 22 West exit. After approximately 7 miles, exit onto Orr Drive. At the end of Orr Drive, turn left and make the first right into the College. Follow signs to Parking Lot #1.
From Morristown area: Take Interstate 287 South and exit onto Interstate 78 West. After approximately 4 miles, take Exit 26. Turn left onto Lamington Road. Proceed approximately 2 miles. College entrance will be on the left. Follow signs to Parking Lot #1.
From Clinton: Take Route 78 East to Exit 26. Turn right onto Lamington Road. Proceed approximately 2 miles and College entrance will be on the left. Follow signs to Parking Lot #1.
From Princeton area: Take Route 206 North to the Somervillw Circle and exit onto Route 28 West. Proceed on Route 28 for approximately 7 miles. College will be on the right. Follow signs to Parking Lot #1.
Raritan Valley Community College is located 4 miles west of Somerville, on Route 28 and Lamington Road, North Branch, NJ (908) 526-1200.
College Center
The College Center provides members of the College community with a place to
relax, socialize, hold meetings or study. Lounge areas and meeting rooms are
dispersed throughout the building. The Center includes dining rooms, the Bookstore,
the Advising and Counseling Services office, Transfer and Career Services, Office
of Enrollment Services, the Corporate and Continuing Education offices, Finance,
Financial Aid, and Student Activities. The Cyber Café/Snack Bar area
is equipped with computers with Internet access and is a comfortable setting
for students to relax and have a snack. Special areas include an atrium, an
outdoor amphitheater and offices of student organizations with a special area
for student publications.
Bookstore
The Golden Lion Bookstore sells new and used textbooks, study aids, best sellers,
computer supplies, art and drafting supplies, clothing, assorted gift items,
greeting cards, and postage stamps. The store also provides magazines, class
rings, nursing pins, and parking decals.
The Golden Lion Bookstore accepts personal checks and MasterCard, VISA, and Discover as a means of payment for merchandise.
Textbook Refund Policy
1. One hundred percent refunds will be given ten school days from the start
of each semester, except Summer, with a sales slip.
2. Refunds will be given for the following reasons only:
a. Course is cancelled.
b. Course is dropped. Students must provide a copy of their drop/add form and
a sales receipt.
c. Defective book, i.e., pages missing, or print upside down. The book can be
returned for an exchange of a complete copy only.
3. If a book is written in, students will receive a 75 percent refund.
4. If books, and/or merchandise, are purchased with a check, the student must
wait seven days for a case refund. Sales slip must be provided.
5. Shrink-wrapped merchandise cannot be returned, if opened.
It is important to be certain of textbook selections. Books must not be written in if they are to be returned.
Used textbooks are purchased from students three times a year: at the end of each semester, during final exams, and at the end of the Summer session. Dates are posted throughout the campus three weeks prior to each book “buy back” period.
Parking
All students are responsible for knowing RVCC’s vehicle and parking regulations.
The information is in the RVCC Vehicle Regulation Handbook, which is available
free of change in the bookstore or at the security office.
Special College parking permits for permanently and temporarily disabled persons may be obtained by presenting proof of disability to your local municipal police department. They will issue a permit. Place the permit on your dashboard when parked in a handicapped parking space at the College.
Food Services
Hot meals, fast food, snacks and vending machine services are provided on the
upper level of the College Center in the Cafeteria. Service is offered Monday
through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,
when classes are in session. The Cyber Café/Snack Bar, located on the
lower level of the College Center, provides ice cream, sandwiches, snacks and
beverages. Vending machine services are available throughout the campus.
Childcare Center
The Center is open to children of full-time and part-time students of Raritan
Valley Community College, as well as the FDU Degree Completion Program. The
Center provides day care and instruction to infants age three months through
children age five. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday during
the Fall and Spring semesters. The Childcare Center has Summer hours as well.
Applications may be obtained from the Raritan Valley Community College Childcare
Center.
Housing and Transportation
Housing and transportation are not provided by the College.
Identification Cards
All students are required to have a valid Raritan Valley Community College Identification
Card with them at all times and present it to a College official when requested.
The card is used for identification in various College facilities and for many
services, as well as student activities. The IDs can be obtained and validated
at the Student Activities Office during the first week of class through mid-semester.
The schedule of times is posted in the Student Activities Center, or students
may call the Center for additional information at (908) 218-8873. Lost of stolen
cards will be replaced for a $5 fee. The student ID card has a bar code affixed.
This bar code is a necessity for use of the College Library and the public libraries
in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties.
Information Center
The Information Center, located in the lower level of the South Wing, provides
information and gives directions. Other areas for current information are bulletin
boards, PORTAC monitors, College publications and The Record.
Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is available on campus in the vicinity of
the Information Center.
Safety and Fire Regulations
Raritan Valley Community College cooperates with all local regulatory and enforcement
agencies. A prompt and safe evacuation is required when an alarm is sounded.
Smoking is not permitted in College buildings.
Counseling Center
The Counseling Center offers guidance to all RVCC students. The staff provides
help with academics, transferring, career decision-making, job seeking skills,
personal decisions, topics specific to international students and Lifelong Educational
Opportunity (LEO) for older students.
Assistance is available for students with inquiries about course selection, program choice, long-term academic planning and transfer of credits. International students or older students returning to college who have special needs can meet with specially trained counselors.
In addition, support groups and counselors are available to help students with personal problems that may affect their academic studies. All sessions remain confidential.
The LEO program was developed in part to assist students in gaining credits for prior learning in the workplace and through other experiences. To receive credit, learning must be validated by exam or portfolio.
Library
The 80,000 volume Evelyn S. Field Learning Resources Center is open to all students
as well as to the community. It offers on-line computer searching with access
to the Internet and CD-ROM indexes and the e-mail service, “Ask A Librarian”.
The Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies Resource Center, a joint project
between the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties and
RVCC, is a 1,600 square foot Center located on the third floor of the RVCC Learning
Resources Center. It houses computers with Internet access; books, tapes and
other reference materials for research and study; and an area for instruction.
The Center has an extensive collection of materials currently available on the
Holocaust and genocide related issues including The Morris and Dorothy Hirsch
Research Library of Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
Math Lab, Writing Lab and Writing Center
The Math Lab, offering both professional and peer tutoring, is equipped with
30 IBM compatible computers providing audio and video instructional aids. The
Writing Lab offers cross-disciplinary support in topic selection and development
of ideas; grammar and finer points of writing style; and paper revisions and
houses 10 IBM compatible computers equipped with writing programs. The Writing
Center offers professional and peer, one-on-one or group tutoring and houses
Service Learning And Cooperative Education
Service learning, a national award winning program, links community service
to academic courses. Students work in community agencies as part of their course
assignments, learning real-world applications and practicing skills that directly
relate to their course goals. Cooperative education allows students to work
for businesses and organizations each semester while earning money and gaining
applicable job skills. After graduation, these corporations hire many students
who participate in cooperative education
Clubs
There are more than twenty student clubs available to participate in including:
The Communications Club, which operates the in-house radio station; the Orgullo
Latino Club, which fosters the culture and heritage of Latino students; or the
Students for Environmental Awareness Club which organizes trips, programs, projects
and hosts speakers to foster an interest in the environment. Student government
and The Record, the student newspaper, are also great for skill building.
Athletics
RVCC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the
Garden State Athletic Conference. The men’s and women’s tennis,
golf, baseball, softball, soccer and basketball teams compete on regional, state
and national levels.
Health Center
Registered nurses are on duty to help students with emergencies, questions and
health concerns.
