to Displaced Workers

Eric Greenberg presentation gives the survey data,
the underlying causes and events to ongoing downsizing and the long-range
implications. The companies surveyed were 8,000 major American companies.
Mainly $10 million companies with 100 plus employees, large to mid sized
companies most of which were from the manufacturing industry.
2. The Changing Workforce

Roger Fine gives the opening remarks on J&J
Credo, how they value family. J&J focus on family within the organization
and outside the organization. They have a strong sense of responsibility
to family. It is a core value for J&J.
Dana Friedman focuses on the change in family
life and how corporations are not providing the support needed for their
employees.
The Family and Work Institute was established
in 1989. A national survey was conducted and the presentation reports the
main findings from this survey and benchmarking that was conducted. The
survey is done every four years and is designed through a work family lens.
It discusses how work is affecting family-life and vice versa. Problems
that result from demographics such as, quality childcare and elder and
the effects of problem on employees, are discussed. Lastly, Ms. Friedman
discusses where companies are in regards to thinking about or dealing with
these issues and how each issue effects men and women differently.
3. HR Issues with the Internet
Presented by: Janet Handel and Lynda

The presentation focuses on the framework of the
Internet and how it works, a trip to HR public sites and a discussion of
two cases, the McGraw Hill case involving their intranet and a Chevron
case, looking at their intranet sites and seeing what their HR group has
done is the foundation for this presentation.
The Inter and Intranet are growing within corporations
and it is due to the ease of developing sites and the benefits of providing
ample information to your internal customers.
4. Managing the Human Side of Change
Presented by: William Bridges, Ph.D.

Corporations focus on planning and implementing
but this is not dealing with the "human side" of change. Dr. Bridges discusses
the reasons for failed change processes due to the inability of corporations
to include the "human side" of change in the plan. Nothing is built in
to deal with the emotional disruptions.
The presentation discusses how organizations go
about planning change and what is missing. Dr. bridges discusses how to
fill the gap in order to improve the change process and what the challenges
are for the leaders in filling these gaps. He also touches on how corporations
can fix employee's problems with change, how to understand the employee
perspective, why employees feel the way they do and how companies can incorporate
these issues into their implementation plan.
5. Recruiting and Retaining Innovative Personnel
Presented by: Stephen R. Grossman

The presentation indicates whom the creative people
are, why they are important to culture, what it means to have a creative
culture and what it means to have cultural support for these people. Stephen
defines Innovation and Creativity and continues to point out the differences
between the two. He stresses the importance of creativity and its role
in decision making for the company.
6. Trends and Issues in Executive Recruiting

Executive searches are growing. This presentation
discusses the recruiting the recruiting industry. The Mr. Rodenhueser goes
through the retainer vs. contingency as well as the fee structure of the
industry. He touches on the movement toward recruiting and executive searches
being a consultative business.
The presentation also includes the market
trends in recruiting. The industry is moving toward a "Jerry Maguire" type
of business, how the "boutique" type of recruiting is rising, the impact
of the Internet and the difference between relationship and transactional
recruiting are all discussed in this presentation.
7. Workforce 2000
Presented by: Francis Mertz, Fairleigh
Dickinson University President

This presentation by President Mertz, discusses
the role of higher education in training the workforce for the new millennium.
He indicates the visions of higher education, while reviewing what is happening
within the population as far as skills, what the shared roles and shared
responsibilities of education are and recommendations on how we can work
with corporations provide the necessary skills.
He discusses the new role of education as a training
function, rather than preparation for life. In order to move toward this
function he discusses the tensions between higher education and corporation
and how these are being managed.
The discussion moves to look beyond the students
in the classroom today and focus on the skills and abilities for the future.
The visions must incorporate more than simply higher education.
Presidents Mertz then discusses some of the
NJ demographics and their effects on the workforce and some of the challenges
ahead as well the need to break down the "silos" to gain more of a partnership
between corporation and education and the possibility of using a competency
based curriculum to drive the reform for the new millennium.
8. Workplace Violence

This presentation discusses a few key points for
corporations and employees to understand in order for them to handle workplace
violence. The points discussed are: how to identify characteristics of
violent employees, how to intervene, what the warning signs to look for
are and what the human psych is of a violent person. Dennis Davis indicates
the importance of awareness of the three levels of violence and the need
for clear definitions of violence. He explains and defines the three levels
in order for employees to become more aware.

Ms. Weiner discusses social trends that are facing
corporations now and will be facing in the future. The presentation gives
some census data, the reality of the data and what that reality means to
corporations. Some of the problems or social challenges discussed are,
the aging problem (the baby boomer issues), the rise of the underclass
and what that means, the impact of the rising fundamentalism religion on
society and corporations, the decreasing middle class and how to handle
employees who have nothing to measure their success by and the "home at
work" type of living for many employees. Why are these important? How will
they effect society generally and what does it mean to HR? Human Resources
must be aware of these societal trends and changes to be prepared to deal
with the effects on the work place.
