History of the Florham-Madison Campus Library

The Florham-Madison Campus Library primarily serves the University community, yet is open to other individuals engaged in research. Through cooperative arrangements with neighboring institutions (College of St. Elizabeth, Drew University, the public libraries of the area, Macculloch Hall Museum, the Morris County Library and special libraries within the county), books and other circulating materials may be loaned to borrowers associated with these institutions. The potential outside user needing special library materials, can become aware of library holdings throughout the country through various computerized database systems including that of the On-Line Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN).

The present FDU Florham-Madison Campus library building occupies the site of the greenhouses of the former Vanderbilt-Twombly estate. The large reading room at the front of the building, designed by McKim, Mead and White and still known as the Orangerie, once held tropical plants, and is all that remains of the original greenhouse-orangerie complex. The Orangerie faces the Mansion across a wide expanse of lawn which is part of the larger Frederick Law Olmsted-designed setting.
