The reference desk is located on the library's main level, to the right of the entrance and through the computer or reference rooms. The department is staffed by professional librarians who provide assistance in use of the online catalog, standard reference works, bibliographies, print indices, as well as the electronic databases in CD-ROM and online formats which are available for searching in the library's computer room.

At the start of each semester, the reference department holds library orientation sessions for the students. Through faculty arrangement with the department, reference staff members hold bibliographic instruction classes in which basic source materials and search tools, and their location within the library, are reviewed. Discussion of specific search strategies tailored to the needs of a particular course may be added.
