Box Scores

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team opened the 2002 season by splitting a doubleheader at LaSalle this afternoon.  The Knights took game one, 14-7, before falling 9-3, in game two.

The Knights pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of seven Explorer errors for their first win of the season.  Matt Nugent gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run blast in his first at-bat of the season.  Later in the inning, junior shortstop Aaron Mayhew stroked a two-run single, Lenny Armenti added a sacrifice fly and the Knights got an unearned run to build a 6-0 lead.  After LaSalle got one back in the bottom of the first, the Knights tacked on three more unearned runs in the second inning to make it 9-1.  The Explorers cut the deficit to 9-5 in the fourth, but Tom McLaughlin led off the sixth with a solo home run and Nugent provided another round-tripper, this one a three-run shot and the Knights didn’t look back.  Along with Nugent’s 2-for-4 game, McLaughlin went 2-for-5 and Pat Geroni was a perfect 3-for-3.  Eric Brooks earned his first win with four innings of relief, striking out four.

The Knights jumped ahead early again in the nightcap, taking a 3-0 lead in the third.  Fairleigh Dickinson got an RBI single from A.J. DiMichele, a sacrifice fly from Jesse Thomas and an unearned run.  La Salle struck back for four in the bottom of the inning.  They tacked on four more in the fourth and another in the sixth for the final margin. Six different Knights registered hits in the contest, all singles as La Salle hurler Chris Hughes fanned six in seven innings.

The Knights return to action next weekend when they travel to Virginia Commonwealth.  They will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2nd and a single game on Sunday, March 3rd.
