Falls 8-3 at VCU RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Michael Leishman struck out 14 batters over eight innings as Virginia Commonwealth (10-10) completed a three-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with an 8-3 victory Sunday at The Diamond. FDU, which fell to 1-4 with the loss, got two hits each from Aaron Mayhew, Matt Nugent, Jesse Thomas and Tom McLaughlin. Shortstop Jose Pabon went two-for-four with a home run and three RBI to pace VCU’s offense against FDU, while left fielder Joe Jackson collected three hits in three at-bats and drove home two runs. Leishman (1-1) overpowed the Knights during his first start of the season, as the righthander allowed just one earned run and fanned nine in his final four innings of work. The Knights and Rams were tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third when Jackson delivered a two-out single to plate junior Danny Lopaze and sophomore Nick Jones to put VCU in front. FDU cut the Rams’ advantage to 4-3 in the fourth when junior Lenny Armenti doubled home classmate Aaron Mayhew, but VCU countered in the bottom of the frame when Pabon launched his second round-tripper of the year, a two-run shot off Knights’ starter Gregg Pleeter (0-1) for a 6-3 cushion.
