Fairleigh Dickinson Baseball Splits with Wagner
Knights capture game two 10-9, Seahawks win opener 7-4.

Box Scores

Teaneck, N.J. – Center fielder Travis Alderman (Flanders, N.J.) and third baseman Joe Munda (Glen Head, N.Y.) each went 3-for-4 to help the Fairleigh Dickinson University (2-11, 1-1 NEC) baseball team to a 10-9 win over visiting Wagner (3-14, 1-1 NEC) in game two of a Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader. Eric Brooks (Philadelphia, Pa.) went the distance on the mound for the Knights, allowing six earned runs and fanning six to earn his second win of the season.  Wagner took game one by a score of 7-4.  Zack Fazio (Medford, N.J.) drove in three runs with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly, while Jon Polonitza (Cranford, N.J.) tossed six innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits to improve to 1-2 on the year for the Seahawks.

Wagner got on the board first in the opener, courtesy of Fazio’s round-tripper after a double by Joe Agnello (Howell, N.J.) to lead off the third inning.  The Knights came back with three runs in their half of the inning on an infield error and a two-run double off the bat of left fielder Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, N.J.)  The Seahawks regained the lead at 4-3 in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Agnello and Fazio’s sacrifice fly and then added two more in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-3.  Pat Geroni (Point Pleasant, N.J.) got one back for the Knights in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, but Wagner scored again in the sixth and Mike McTamney (Toms River, N.J.) shut the door for Wagner in the seventh to earn his first save of the season.

Game two was knotted at 4-4 heading into the top of the fifth inning when Wagner struck for three runs to take a 7-4 lead on a two-run double by Nick Pompo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by Carmine Jichetti (Staten Island, N.Y.)  The Knights then put together their own four-run rally in the bottom of the inning. FDU loaded the bases and Aaron Mayhew (Silver Springs, Md.) drove in the first run as he reached on a fielder’s choice.  Munda and Nick Trincellita (Hoboken, N.J.) followed with a pair of RBI singles and the Knights scored another run on a Wagner error to regain the lead at 8-7.  They added two important insurance runs in the sixth to take a 10-7 lead.  Wagner rallied for two in the seventh, but Brooks gutted it out and closed the game by getting Anthony Distefano (Middletown, N.Y.) to pop up for the final out with the tying run on second base.

The Knights and Seahawks will return to action on Sunday, March 24th for a single game beginning at 12:00 p.m.
