Wagner Rallies past Fairleigh Dickinson Baseball, 20-15
Knights and Seahawks combine for 31 hits.

Box Score

Teaneck, N.J. – Wagner (4-14, 2-1 NEC) posted nine runs in the eighth inning and seven more in the ninth to rally from a 15-4 deficit and defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (2-12, 1-2 NEC) by a score of 20-15, in Northeast Conference (NEC) baseball action on Sunday.  The two teams combined for 31 hits, 23 walks, 19 runners left on base, six errors and 10 pitchers saw time on the mound in a game that took three hours and 55 minutes.

The Knights had 17 of those hits as each starter had at least one.  Right fielder Jesse Thomas (Ventnor, N.J.) led the attack by going 3-for-5 with three RBI on two home runs and a double for Fairleigh Dickinson.  Third baseman Joe Munda (Glen Head, N.Y.) also went 2-for-5 with four RBI on a home run and a double.

Wagner was led by Bryan Distefano’s (Middletown, N.Y.) 3-for-4 day with five RBI. Chris Cerullo (Toms River, N.J.) also went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Rob Kostic (E.Windsor, N.J.) earned the win in relief for Wagner as he tossed one and two-thirds of inning, struck out two and did not allow a run.  Gregg Pleeter (Spring Valley, N.Y.) got a no decision for the Knights.  Despite walking eight batters he allowed just four runs on four hits and struck out eight in five and two-thirds innings.

The Seahawks took advantage of five of Fairleigh Dickinson’s 18 walks and two errors in the eighth inning rally.  The big blow in the inning came from Zach Fazio (Medford, N.J.) who hit a three-run double to cut the deficit to 15-10.  Cerullo later drove in a run with a single and Chris Dick (Denville, N.J.) trimmed the margin to 15-13 with a run-scoring ground out.

After Kostic set the Knights down in order in the bottom of the eighth, the Seahawks got back-to-back singles from Distefano and Joe Agnello (Howell, N.J.) to lead off the ninth.  An errant throw on a bunt play allowed Distefano to score and two batters later Anthony Gioielli (Vineland, N.J.) knotted the game at 15-15 with an RBI single.  Cerullo followed with his own run-scoring single to give the Seahawks a 16-15 lead. Chris Dick added a sacrifice fly and Distefano completed the rally with a three-run double.

The Knights struck first, getting a solo home run off the bat of Thomas, his second of the season, in the bottom of the first inning.  Pat Geroni (Point Pleasant, N.J.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to give the Knights a 2-0 lead and Munda later knocked in two with a double to put Fairleigh Dickinson ahead 4-0.

Wagner came back with two runs in the fifth on a two-run homer from Nick Pompo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) before the Knights exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame.  A.J. DiMichele (Centereach, N.Y.) led it off with a single and Thomas connected for his second round-tripper of the game to put the Knights up 6-2.  They got two more on an outfield error and Munda connected for his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot, to stretch the lead to 10-2.

The Seahawks got two back in the top of the sixth to cut the Knights’ lead to 10-4.  The Knights answered with four runs in their half of the inning, getting an RBI double from Geroni, a two-run single from Travis Alderman (Flanders, N.J.) and an RBI single from Aaron Mayhew (Silver Spring, Md.)  They added one more in the seventh on an RBI single by Gary Mannuzza (Forked River, N.J.), before Wagner began its comeback in the eighth.

The Knights return to action on Tuesday, March 26th, when they host Hofstra at 3:30 p.m.
