Monmouth Sweeps FDU Baseball, 3-2, 10-3
Geroni homers for Knights in game one.

W. Long Branch, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at the hands of host Monmouth this afternoon.  The Hawks won the opener 3-2, scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and took the nightcap 10-3.  The Knights fell to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in NEC play, while the Hawks improved to 8-10 overall and stayed undefeated at 5-0 in NEC action.

With the game knotted at 2-2 and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Knights’ starter Gregg Pleeter (0-3) walked Tim Davis.  After Pleeter gave way to reliever Rob Cicarini, center fielder Frank Pilitowski moved Davis to second with a sacrifice bunt and second baseman Lance Koenig drove him in with a game-winning single to left field.

The Knights scored first in the opener, putting up two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by first baseman Pat Geroni.  Monmouth tied the game up at 2-2 in the sixth inning on a two-run shot off the bat of catcher Mike St. Martine.

Monmouth starter Andrew Palmieri went the distance and allowed just three Knight hits.  Matt Nugent and Andrew Parise each had singles for Fairleigh Dickinson.  Pleeter allowed just six hits and fanned seven for Fairleigh Dickinson.

After Monmouth went up 1-0 in the second inning of game two, Fairleigh Dickinson tied it up in the third on an RBI single by A.J. DiMichele.  The Hawks answered with six runs on six hits in their half of the inning and added another in the fourth to build an 8-1 lead.  The Knights got two back and cut the deficit to 8-3 on a two-run single by Geroni, but Monmouth got both runs back in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jay Law and put the game away at 10-3.

The Knights and Hawks will complete their three-game series on Saturday, March 30, at 12:00 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
