Fairleigh Dickinson Baseball Falls to Monmouth, 10-4
Thomas, Parise go deep for Knights.

W. Long Branch, N.J.Monmouth University (9-10, 6-0 NEC) defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 10-4 in a Northeast Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon in West Long Branch. The Hawks, managed 10 runs on 15 hits and scored at least one run in the first five innings of the ballgame.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Lance Koenig’s double scored Tim Davis from second base.  Davis led off the game reaching on an error and advancing to second on a wild pitch.  In the second, Monmouth posted four runs off of FDU starter Adam Vogel. After Mike St. Martine and Fran Rotella reached on singles, Frank Pilitikowski’s RBI single scored St. Martine.  Davis then singled to drive home two more runs. Koenig picked up another RBI on a sacrifice fly that brought home Davis as the Hawks took a 5-0 lead.

Monmouth combined for five more runs over the next six innings, as the Hawks would cruise to the victory, getting seven successful stolen bases in eight attempts on the afternoon.  Koenig would finish the game batting 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs, a run scored, one walk, and two stolen bases.  Pilitowski went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Davis also had two RBIs and two runs scored from the leadoff spot.

FDU (2-15, 1-5 NEC) registered four runs on seven hits.  Jesse Thomas hit a two run home run to get the Knights on the scoreboard in the top of the third, while Andrew Parise also homered with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, which made the score 9-3.  Parise and Lenny Armenti each went 2-for-5 on the day. Vogel (0-1) was saddled with the loss, giving up eight runs on 11 hits in three and one-third innings while striking out two.

Starter Jim Carone (3-2) earned the win for Monmouth, going five and two-thirds inning while giving up four runs on six hits.  Enrique Genao came on in relief and pitched two and a third innings of shutout ball while giving up only one hit.  Mike Kelly, the Hawks’ starting shortstop, entered in the ninth to retire the Knights in order.

The Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 3rd, when they host Sacred Heart University in a NEC doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
