Box Scores

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth swept a doubleheader over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson at The Diamond on Saturday. VCU pounded out 20 hits to roll to a 24-6 victory over the Knights in game one and scored five times in the fourth inning en route to a 12-8 decision in the nightcap. Matt Nugent went 4-for-9 on the day with three runs batted in for the Knights.  Pat Geroni also went 3-for-8 with three runs batted in.

Nick Jones went four-for-five with three RBI in the opener, Jeff Parrish collected three hits and six RBI in the Rams' game one win.

VCU (9-9) struck for six runs in the bottom of the first inning off FDU starter Scott Barchetto (0-1) in the opener. Bryan Gillespie opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring in Matt Davis. Jones later delivered a run-scoring double and Parrish added an RBI base hit in the frame.

VCU kept up its offensive onslaught by scoring multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 14-6 advantage, then broke the game wide open with a 10-run seventh highlighted by a grand-slam home run by Parrish off Knights' reliever Brent Savin.

FDU (1-3) got two hits and two RBI from senior first baseman Pat Geroni in game one, while junior Matt Nugent and sophomore Travis Alderman each went two-for-four with one RBI in defeat. In the nightcap, sophomore Brian Marshall (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first career victory as the Rams rallied from an early three-run deficit. The southpaw allowed just two hits and struck out six.

The Knights struck for four runs in the top of the third off VCU starter Matt Prendergast, with Geroni and junior catcher Andrew Parise delivering run-scoring singles, as FDU opened up a 4-1 lead in game two. The Rams cut the deficit to a run in the bottom of the frame when Pabon tripled in Davis and later came home on a groundout off the bat of Orozco. VCU then scored five times in the fourth, with Davis giving the Rams a 5-4 lead with a two-RBI single and Pabon driving in a pair of runs with his second triple of the day.

VCU extended its cushion to 12-4 after six innings before FDU put up four runs in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring. Nugent and junior Aaron Mayhew each stroked two run singles in the Knights' comeback effort.

The two teams wrap up their three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m.
