Dickinson Baseball Downs Pace, 2-1 in 12 innings Teaneck,
N.J. – Junior
catcher Matt Nugent (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove a single down the
left field line with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the
twelfth inning to lift the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team to a
thrilling 2-1, win over visiting Pace University this afternoon at FDU
field. The Knights improved
to 6-25 with their third win in the last four games.
Pace dropped to 10-26 overall.
With one out and the game knotted at 1-1, second baseman Tom
McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.) singled up the middle off Pace reliever Patrick
Stanley (Ramsey, N.J.) and center fielder Lenny Armenti
(Bloomfield, N.J.) followed
with a single to right field, moving McLaughlin to third base.
After Armenti stole second base, Stanley struck out
pinch-hitter Gary Manuzza (Forked River, N.J.) and intentionally
walked first baseman Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) to load the
bases and set up a force out. Nugent
made the most of his opportunity, slicing a line drive just inside the
left field foul line to bring home McLaughlin with the winning
run and stretch his hitting streak to 10 straight games.
Knights’ starter Rob Cicarini (Dumont, N.J.) and Pace
starter Rob Van Riper (Bloomingdale, N.J.) locked up in a classic
pitchers duel this afternoon and both went home with a no-decision.
The Knights were able to touch Van Riper for a run in the
fifth. Joe Munda (Glenhead,
N.Y.) led the frame off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. After a strikeout
and an infield out which moved Munda to third, Armenti
laid down a bunt base hit to plate the first run.
Cicarini carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning
before the Setters loaded the bases with three singles and one out.
The junior right-hander was able to work out of the jam by
getting a double play ball to end the threat.
Pace finally struck in the top of the ninth and two outs.
Pace first baseman Mike Bohlander (Katonah, N.Y.) drew a
walk and came around to score on the next pitch as Frank Siano
(Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) doubled off the left field fence to send
the game into extra innings.
Cicarini went 10 innings for the Knights, allowed just one
earned run on six hits, two walks and fanned a career-high 10 batters.
Eric Brooks (Philadelphia, Pa.) tossed the final two
innings, struck out two and didn’t allow a hit to earn his fourth win
of the season. Van Riper struck out eight for Pace and allowed
just two hits in nine innings.
McLaughlin went 2-for-5 for Fairleigh Dickinson and Armenti
had a 2-for-6 day. Siano
went 2-for-5 for Pace.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday with another
non-conference game at C.W. Post. First
pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
