Brooks, Knights Outlast Sacred Heart, 8-7 in Extra Innings.
Mannuzza’s pinch-hit gives FDU baseball win in 9th, game two suspended.

Box Score

Teaneck, N.J. – Gary Mannuzza (Forked River, N.J.) delivered a bases loaded, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team to a thrilling 8-7, come-from-behind win over visiting Sacred Heart University this afternoon.  Eric Brooks (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave the Knights another in a string of gutsy performances on the mound as he went the distance for his third win of the year.  Fairleigh Dickinson snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-15 overall and 2-5 in NEC play, while Sacred Heart fell to 7-15 overall and 1-6 in NEC action.  Game two of their doubleheader was suspended due to inclement weather.  That contest will be completed on Wednesday, April 10th at 1 p.m., prior to their regularly scheduled nine-inning game at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.  Sacred Heart was leading 4-2 in the top of the fourth.

The Pioneers jumped ahead early in game one, putting up four runs in the top of the first inning.  First baseman Jamie Schilkowski (Catskill, N.Y.) delivered the big blow of the inning with a three-run home run and designated hitter Gary Flynn (Port Chester, N.Y.) drove in the fourth run with a single. After Sacred Heart added a run in the second inning on a Matt Lemanczyk (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) triple, the Pioneers tacked on two more in the third on a two-run double by Flynn to stretch the lead to 7-0.

The Knights began to chip away in the bottom of the third, getting two on a double off the bat of Matt Nugent (Staten Island, N.Y.)  Two innings later they trimmed the margin to 7-4 on an RBI single from Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) and took advantage of an unearned run.  Fairleigh Dickinson continued the comeback in the sixth inning, posting three more runs on two Sacred Heart errors to knot the game at 7-7.   The rally was completed in the ninth as the Knights loaded the bases.  Nugent led the inning off with a double off the right field fence.  Aaron Mayhew (Silver Springs, Md.) reached on a fielder’s choice on an attempted sacrifice bunt, but Nugent reached third safely as the pitcher misplayed the ball.  After Travis Alderman (Flanders, N.J.) was intentionally walked, Mannuzza came through with a single to right field to plate Nugent with the game-winner.

Brooks (3-3), who has all three Knights’ wins this year, threw all nine innings, allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and struck out five, while tossing 135 pitches. The Knights racked up 15 hits in the game, led by Joe Munda’s (Glen Head, N.Y.) 3-for-3 day and Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, N.J.) also went 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Geroni, Nugent and Tom McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.) each added two hits for the Knights.

Sacred Heart got a solid effort from Charles Ristano (Valley Stream, N.Y.) as he allowed four earned runs in seven and one-third innings, while striking out seven.  Lemanczyk, Schilkowski, Flynn and Brian Rojee (Foxboro, Mass.) each had two-hits for the Pioneers.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, April 6th, when they host Central Connecticut State in a NEC doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
