N.J. – C.W. Post
scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to break a 5-5 tie and
defeat the Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team 8-6 in a
non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Knights fell to 6-30 overall, while the Pioneers improved to
9-28-1.
With the game knotted at 5-5, Brian Mitchell (Staten Island,
N.Y.) led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo home run over
the right centerfield fence to put the Pioneers up 6-5.
John Maser (Ozone Park, N.Y.) followed with a double down
the right field line and two batters later scored on a triple off the
bat of Jack Montague (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), putting C.W. Post
ahead 7-5.
The Knights got one run back in the bottom of the inning to cut
the deficit to 7-6. Tom McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.) drew a walk to lead it
off and after a ground out, Matt Nugent (Staten Island, N.Y.)
also walked. Pinch-hitter Rob
Cicarini (Dumont, N.J.) followed with a double to left center to
plate McLaughlin.
The Pioneers quickly answered in the ninth with one out when Tim
O’Sullivan (Valley Stream, N.Y.) connected for a solo home run to
put them back up by two at 8-6. Joe
Esposito (Sayville, N.Y.) then entered the game in the bottom of the
ninth to close the door for C.W. Post.
After fanning the first two batters, Esposito walked
pinch-hitter Gary Mannuzza (Forked River, N.J.) and McLaughlin,
but got Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, N.J.) to ground out and end
the game.
Michael Vicaro (Randolph, N.J.) went the first eight
innings on the mound for C.W. Post to improve his record to 2-5.
He allowed four earned runs, walked four and struck out six.
Esposito earned his second save of the season.
The Knights did collect 12 hits off Vicaro, but left 13
runners on, while C.W. Post recorded 11 hits and left 16 runners on
base.
Armenti went 3-for-5 on the day for the Knights with two
runs scored and one run batted in.
Andrew Parise (Allendale, N.J.) and Nick Trincellita
(Hoboken, N.J.) each went 2-for-5.
Montague paced the Pioneer offense with a 3-for-4 day to
go along with three runs batted in.
O’Sullivan went 2-for-6 with a double and his
round-tripper. The Knights return to action on Wednesday, May 1st, when they host St. Peter’s College at 3:30 p.m.
