Central
Connecticut Takes Two from FDU - 8-0 & 10-3
Teaneck,
N.J. –
The Fairleigh Dickinson
University baseball team dropped both ends of an NEC doubleheader to
visiting Central Connecticut State this afternoon. The Blue Devils posted an 8-0 shutout in game one before
taking the Knights 10-3 in the nightcap.
The Knights dropped to 3-17 overall and 2-7 in NEC play, while
Central Connecticut improved to 16-9 overall and 9-1 in NEC action. Tom
McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.) led the Knights’ offense with a
3-for-7 day. Robert
Hosgood (Clifton, Park, N.Y.) went 3-for-7 for the Blue Devils with
four runs batted in and Nick Macellero (Plainville, Conn.) went
3-for-6 on the day and drove in four.
Macellaro and Jay Landeen (Southington, Conn.) led
the third inning of game one off by drawing back-to-back walks for
Central. After a sacrifice
bunt by Patrick Holden (Bristol, Conn.) moved the runners over,
Adam Orlando (Magnolia, Mass.) gave the Blue Devils a 1-0
lead with an RBI single. Hosgood followed with another
run-scoring single and the Blue Devils also got an unearned run to take
a 3-0 lead. They went on to
add a single run in the fourth on a single by Landeen, before
putting the game away with two more in the fifth and single runs in the
sixth and seventh innings.
Barry Hertzler (E. Providence, R.I.) went the distance for
Central Connecticut to improve to 2-3 on the year. He allowed just five
hits, walked none and struck out seven.
McLaughlin went 2-for-3 for the Knights and Matt Nugent
(Staten Island, N.Y.) had a double.
Orlando paced the Central Connecticut offense, going
2-for-4 with a double and a pair of stolen bases.
Hosgood got the Blue Devils on the board first in game two
with a two-run home run, driving in Orlando who led things off
with a triple. The Knights
answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the
game at 2-2. Pat Geroni
(Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) got the first RBI by drawing a bases-loaded
walk and Nick Trincellita (Hoboken, N.J.) knocked in the other
with a sacrifice fly.
The Knights took a 3-2 lead in the second inning, taking
advantage of an infield error for an unearned run, but Central
Connecticut capitalized on three Fairleigh Dickinson errors in the third
inning to post four runs and take a 6-3 lead. Blue Devils reliever Donald Crossman (Winsted, Conn.)
held the Knights in check for the remainder of the game and Central
Connecticut tallied four more runs in the seventh to seal the contest.
Crossman (2-1) went the final six innings for Central
Connecticut and did not allow an earned run, while fanning seven and
giving up just four hits. Geroni finished 2-for-3 in the game for the Knights
with a pair of singles.
The Knights and Blue Devils will complete their three-game series
on Sunday, April 6, at FDU field. First
pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. [Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)] FDU Copyright © 2000-2002 Fairleigh Dickinson University.
