Baseball Falls to Central Connecticut, 16-4 Teaneck,
N.J. – Central
Connecticut State collected 14 hits and took advantage of 11 walks and
six errors to defeat the Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team by
a score of 16-4, this afternoon at FDU field. Phil Rothkugel
(Plainville, Conn.) paced the Blue Devils’ (17-9, 10-1 NEC)
offense with four runs batted in, including a three-run home run. Adam
Orlando (Magnolia, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in for
Central Connecticut. The
Knights (3-18, 2-8 NEC) also collected 14 hits on the day, led by Matt
Nugent’s (Staten Island, N.Y.) 3-for-4 game.
Central Connecticut jumped out early, getting back-to-back home
runs from Orlando and Robert Hosgood (Clifton Park, N.Y.)
to start the game off. The Knights got one back in the bottom of the
first as Tom McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.), who led off with a
single, later came in to score on a double-play ball.
The Blue Devils got two more in the third to build a 4-1
advantage. Tim
D’Aquila (Middletown, Conn.) drove in one with a double and Chip
Rourke (Jewett City, Conn.) plated the other with a sacrifice fly.
The Knights answered again with three runs in the bottom of the
frame to knot the game at 4-4. After a Jesse Thomas (Ventnor, N.J.) double to lead it
off, Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) knocked him in with a single
to center field. Nugent
followed with a double and then Andrew Parise’s (Allendale, N.J.)
infield ground ball allowed Thomas to score.
Nick Trincellita (Hoboken, N.J.) doubled to score Nugent
on the next at bat.
Rothkugel broke up the deadlock in the fourth inning with
his three-run shot to center field and gave the Blue Devils a 7-4 lead.
Central Connecticut went on to score twice in the fifth, four times in
the sixth and put it away with three in the seventh.
Jim Clarke (S. Dartmouth, Mass.) went the first five
innings for Central Connecticut to improve to 5-2 on the year. McLaughlin,
Thomas and Trincellita each had a pair of hits in the game
for Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 10th
against Sacred Heart at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. The two teams
will complete last week’s suspended game at 1:00 p.m. before playing
their regularly scheduled nine-inning contest. Sacred Heart leads the
suspend game 4-2, in the top of the fourth.
