Fairleigh Dickinson Baseball Takes Two From Mount 7-2, 7-3
Pleeter, Brooks pitch Knights to first sweep of year.

Box Scores

Teaneck, N.J. Sophomore Gregg Pleeter (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and junior Eric Brooks (Philadelphia, Pa.) tossed a pair of complete games to help the Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team to its first doubleheader sweep this year, 7-2 and 7-3, over visiting Mount St. Mary’s on Alumni Day this afternoon.  On the day, designated hitter Rob Cicarini (Dumont, N.J.) went 5-for-7 with a run batted in, while second baseman Tom McLaughlin (Glendora, N.J.) was 4-for-6 and left fielder Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, N.J.) 3-for-6 with four runs batted in.
The Knights improved to 9-35 overall and 7-19 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Mount dropped to 17-35 overall and 10-16 in the NEC.
In game one, Mount St. Mary’s struck for a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the first.  The Mount got run-scoring singles from right fielder Jason Weszka (Mount Airy, Md.) and first baseman Jeff Koenig (Germantown, Md.) to take the early lead. Pleeter settled down from there and allowed just one more hit in the contest.
The Knights got one back in the third on a sacrifice fly by Armenti.  They scored four more times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.  After McLaughlin led off with a bunt base hit and advanced to second on an error, Armenti knocked him in with a double to right center.  Armenti would later score on a double play ball and the Knights added two more on singles by center fielder Travis Alderman (Flanders, N.J.) and right fielder A.J. DiMichele (Centereach, N.Y.).  First baseman Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) gave the Knights some insurance in the sixth with a two-run single.
Pleeter (2-7) fanned seven and allowed just four hits to earn his second collegiate win.
Fairleigh Dickinson scored first in game two as shortstop Mike Knorr (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second.  McLaughlin led the bottom of the third off with a triple and was plated on a successful squeeze by Armenti to put the Knights up 2-0.  Later in the inning Cicarini gave the Knights a 3-0 advantage with a run scoring single.
The two teams traded runs in the fourth and after Fairleigh Dickinson went back up 5-1 in the fifth, the Mount struck for a pair in the sixth.  Designated hitter Chris Staub (Westminster, Md.) led it off with a double to left center.  Center fielder Mike Freundel (Fort Washington, Md.) drove Staub in with a double and Weszka later drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Knights answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.  McLaughlin was hit by a pitch with one out and Armenti followed by reaching on an infield error.  Nugent then put the game away with a two run double.
Brooks (6-6) struck out eight, allowed just four hits and one earned run to earn his team-leading sixth win of the season.
The two teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
