FDU Baseball Places Two on All-State Teams
Geroni tabbed first team, Nugent earns second team honors.

Hackensack, N.J. The New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) announced its 2002 award winners at its weekly meeting on Monday night at the Hilton in East Brunswick. Fairleigh Dickinson University placed two players on the Division I All-State teams as first baseman Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) earned first team honors and Matt Nugent (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned second team laurels as a utility player.  Rider’s Casey Long was named Division I Player of the Year, Monmouth’s Dean Ehehalt was named Division I Coach of the Year, Rutgers’ Tom Wheeler was named Division I Pitcher of the Year and Rutgers’ Jeff Frazier earned Division I Rookie of the Year honors.

Geroni, a 6-foot-1, junior, was the Knights’ leading hitter with a .331 batting average.  He also led the squad with 38 runs batted in, eight home runs, 84 total bases, a .535 slugging percentage and 52 hits.  Geroni collected 15 multiple-hit games and 12 multiple-RBI games on the year and finished the season by hitting in five of his last six games.  He was solid in the field as well, making just five errors to post a .986 fielding percentage and had a hand in 29 double plays.

Nugent, the Knights regular catcher, also saw time at second base, shortstop, left field, right field and as a designated hitter.  The 6-foot junior also batted in seven different spots in the lineup as the Knights’ most versatile player.  Nugent batted .319 on the year with a team-leading nine doubles, 30 runs batted in, 13 extra base hits and was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.  Midway through the season he put together a 12-game hitting streak, the Knights’ longest of the year.

Geroni, Nugent and all other award winners will be honored at the annual NJCBA banquet on Tuesday, May 28, at the Hilton in East Brunswick.  For ticket information, please contact Jay Blackwell at 732-513-4710.
