Knights Split with Long Island
Eric Brooks earns fifth win for Knights.

Brooklyn, NY (May 4, 2002) -- The FDU baseball team split a NEC doubleheader with Long Island this afternoon.  The Knights took game two, 4-3, after falling 3-0 in the opener.
Dan Barrios (4-7) retired the last 11 batters for his third straight victory in the opener for LIU. He only walked one over seven innings and faced just two batters above the minimum.
The Blackbirds (9-30, 6-17 NEC) tallied first in the fourth inning. Sophomore Anthony Valvano (Lyndhurst, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by freshman Thomas Bennett (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison). LIU gained a 2-0 cushion in the fourth as sophomore Khyl Farrison (Suffern, NY/Rockland CC) doubled and senior Tim Shoffler (Cape May, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) singled him home with a bloop to right field. The final tally was in the fifth as senior Justin Kotarski (Luzerne, PA/Misericordia) singled and, three batters later, freshman Dustin Roach (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
Spring Valley, NY native Gregg Pleeter (1-7) permitted three runs and six hits over six innings with four walks and four strikeouts for the Knights (7-32, 5-18). Travis Alderman (Flanders, NJ) singled in the third inning and Tom McLaughlin (Glendora, NJ) did likewise in the fourth.
The Knights scored game two’s decisive run in the fifth inning. Matt Nugent (Staten Island, NY) walked, took second on a passed ball and stole third. Pat Geroni (Point Pleasant, NJ), who hit a solo homer in the third inning to bring FDU to a 3-3 tie, grounded out to plate Nugent for the last of his three RBI.
The Blackbirds scored three times in the first inning for a 3-1 lead. Kotarski walked, stole second, reached third on an error and scored on a fielder’s choice by senior Mike Wilson (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison), who was picked off later in the inning. Bennett and Farrison singled and both scored when freshman Frank Zapata (Saugas, CA/Canyon) doubled off the left-field wall.
Prior to Geroni’s homer in the third, Nugent had an RBI groundout to score Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, NJ) for a 3-2 FDU deficit. The Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a run-scoring single by Geroni.
Philadelphia, PA product Eric Brooks (5-6) struck out six and yielded three runs -- one earned -- and six hits over seven innings with three walks for FDU. Watlerloo, NY freshman Shaun Keebler (1-8) struck out seven, but surrendered four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits over 6 2/3 frames with two walks. Zapata and senior Mike Garbowski (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) finished with two hits.
These teams play the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday at 12:00 pm.
