Baseball Falls at Long Island, 4-1
Lenny
Armenti goes 3-for-4 for Knights.
Brooklyn, NY (May 5, 2002)
-- Freshman Stephen Wohltman (West New York, NJ/Memorial) tossed a
complete-game and senior Tim Shoffler (Cape May, NJ/Wildwood Catholic)
belted a two-run homer as Long Island grabbed the rubber game of its
three-game Northeast Conference series against Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-1,
at LIU Field. Wohltman (3-3) gave up just one run and seven hits over
nine innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Fairleigh
Dickinson (7-33, 5-19 NEC) opened the scoring in the third inning. Joe
Munda (Glen Head, NY) led off with a walk and Tom McLaughlin (Glendora,
NJ) was hit by a pitch. Lenny Armenti (Bloomfield, NJ) had a bunt single
to load the bases, but Wohltman escaped major trouble. He got Matt
Nugent (Staten Island, NY) on a sacrifice fly and sophomore center
fielder Khyl Farrison (Suffern, NY/Rockland CC) threw a strike to senior
Charles Inserra (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), who tagged McLaughlin out at
third base. Pat Geroni (Point Pleasant, NJ), who homered Saturday
against the Blackbirds, filed out to end the inning.
LIU (10-30, 7-17)
earned its first two runs in the fifth. Shoffler singled through the
left side and reached third when sophomore Anthony Valvano (Lyndhurst,
NJ/Seton Hall Prep) laced a one-out double down the right-field line.
Junior Glen Farkas (Edison, NJ/Edison) dropped a perfect suicide squeeze
that scored Shoffler for a 1-1 tie. Valvano advanced to third on the
play and crossed home when senior Justin Kotarski (Luzerne, PA/Misericordia
Coll.) singled to center field.
The Blackbirds
added two more runs in the sixth. Farrison began a two-out rally with a
double off the fence in left-center field. Shoffler followed with a home
run to left field to close the scoring.
Shoffler finished
2-for-4 as part of the Blackbirds’ seven-hit attack. Inserra went
1-for-3.
Dumont, NJ native
Rob Cicarini (0-4) permitted four runs and six hits over seven innings
with four strikeouts and a walk for the Knights. Armenti went 3-for-4 to
help FDU finish with seven hits.
