Rutgers
Defeats FDU Baseball, 14-4
PISCATAWAY,
NJ (May 7, 2002) – Junior Leon
Shade (Montclair, NJ) smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of
the fourth inning to spark an eight run rally and propel Rutgers to a
14-4 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson this afternoon at the Class of
’53 Baseball Complex. Senior Jeff
Pierce (Brick, NJ) picked up his second win of the season for the
Scarlet Knights, who move to 30-18 on the season with the win. The
Knights (7-34) collected 12 hits on the day, getting two each from Rob
Cicarini (Dumont, N.J.), Pat Geroni (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) and Joe
Munda (Glen Head, N.Y.) After walks to Mike
Popowski (Sayerville, NJ) and Ryan
Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) in the fourth, Shade drilled a pitch over
the left field wall for his second home run of the season. Nick
Cerulo (Woodbridge, NJ) followed with a single, and after a walk to Val
Majewski (Freehold, NJ), eff
Frazier (Toms River, NJ) doubled down the left field line, scoring
Cerulo. Steve Normane (West Orange, NJ) brought Majewski home with a single
to center, and shortstop Tom
Sweeney (Sparta, NJ) followed with a double of his own, scoring
Normane. Sweeney later scored on a wild pitch, and after a walk to
Lillis, Shade notched his fourth RBI of the inning with a single to
center to score Lillis. Rutgers opened the
scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Steve Normane (West Orange, NJ) reached base on an error. After
stealing second, Normane advanced to third on a Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) pop out and later scored on a Mike
Popowski (Sayerville, NJ) groundout. FDU scored two runs in the top
of the third, but Frazier blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of
the frame, his team-leading 11th of the season, to put the
Scarlet Knights back in front 3-2. The Knights got one back in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3, before Rutgers put up eight in the fourth and tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Brian Bunyan (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) pitched well in relief for the Knights, going the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out three. The Knights return to
action on Wednesday at Iona with a 3:30 p.m. start. [Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)] FDU Copyright © 2000-2002 Fairleigh Dickinson University.
