Knights Begin Season with Success at Temple Open
Cathleen Ferris and Victoria Helmer both finish 14th in their weapons

Philadelphia, PA -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's fencing team opened their season with a successful showing at the Temple Open.  Led by head coach Roger Cummings in his first year with the Knights, the squad placed two fencers in the semifinals and four fencers in the quarterfinals.

Cathleen Ferris (St. Louis, MO) and Victoria Helmer (Morristown, NJ) both placed in the top 16, finishing 14th in the sabre and foil divisions, respectively.The epee contingent had three athletes advance to the quarterfinals with Jillian Peabody (Somerville, NJ) finishing 20th, Courtney Brennan (Centereach, NY) finishing 21st and Kathleen Kolakowski (Huntington, NY) finishing 22nd.  Sabina Orsi (Long Valley, NJ) also finished in the quarterfinals in the sabre division (26th place) and Sochivly Ou (Bronx, NY) advanced to the second round in the foil division (37th place).

"I am very pleased with our showing," said head coach Cummings.  "We look forward to next weekend and competing at Penn State."

Fifty-eight athletes competed in the sabre division, the largest field of sabre competitors ever for the Temple Open.
