Wednesday, March 6, 2002 FDU
to Send Five Fencers to NCAA Regionals
HACKENSACK,
NJ - Five
athletes from the Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s fencing team
qualified to compete at the 2002 Mid-Atlantic/South NCAA Regional
Championships, to be held on Saturday, March 9th on the campus
of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Senior
Sabina Orsi (Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) and junior Cathleen
Ferris (St. Louis, MO/John F. Kennedy) will lead the way for the
Knights. Orsi has steadily improved over her four years and her
performance has become an example of leadership and hard work.
She owns a career sabre record of 104-69 including a 25-20 record
this year, sweeping bouts from four schools. Ferris, a 2000 and
2001 NCAA Championships participant is also poised for an impressive
performance this weekend. She has posted a 33-11 record this season for a
career mark of 162-31 fencing sabre—an 83.9% winning percentage. Joining
the upperclassman will be epee fencer sophomore Courtney Brennan (Centereach,
NY/Centerreach) for her second consecutive trip to regionals.
Also from the epee squad is freshman Kathleen Kolakowski
(Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman). Fellow
freshman Victoria Helmer (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) will be the
lone foil fencer for the Knights at regionals. The Knights are lead by head coach Roger Cummings in his first season at FDU. *
