Knights
Compete at NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships
Orsi, Ferris and Helmer post top 15 finishes competing against nationally
ranked teams
MADISON,
NJ - Five
athletes from the Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s fencing team
competed at the 2002 Mid-Atlantic/South NCAA Regional
Championships, held on the campus
of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
Four of the top ten teams in the nation, according to the USFA Coaches'
National Poll, were competing at the championships.
Senior
Sabina Orsi (Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) and junior Cathleen
Ferris (St. Louis, MO/John F. Kennedy) led the way for the Knights in
the sabre division. Orsi recorded the highest finish for the
Knights this weekend with 13th place while Ferris was right behind
in 14th place out of 25 sabre fencers.
Freshman
Victoria Helmer (Morristown, NJ/Morristown)
was the lone foil fencer for the Knights represented at the
championships, finishing in 15th place out of 28 participants.
Epee freshman Kathleen Kolakowski
(Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) fenced her way to a 20th place finish
out of 31 competitors while sophomore Courtney Brennan (Centereach,
NY/Centerreach) placed 27th.
The
Knights are lead by head coach Roger Cummings in his first season
at FDU.
