Dickinson Takes Mount, 69-64 Emmitsburg, Md. - A back and forth Northeast Conference basketball game was all Fairleigh Dickinson University (3-16/3-7) in the final six minutes in Emmitsburg, Md., where the Knights defeated the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's College (2-15/1-9), 69-63. Sophomore Mensah Peterson (North Brunswick, N.J.) led four Knights in double-digits as he scored 17 points off the bench to help them snap a three-game losing streak. Sophomore Koki Adasi scored a game-high 23 points for the Mount. Peterson
hit a jumper with 6:34 left in the contest to knot the game at 52-52. Over the
next three minutes and 31 seconds the Knights outscored the Mount 9-2,
highlighted by four points each from Peterson and Matt Hammond (Burlington,
N.J.) and secured their second victory of the season over the Mountaineers.
James Felton (Jersey City, N.J.) also scored 17 points in the game and recorded
a team-high eight rebounds for the Knights. The Mount made a late charge to cut
the lead to three with 51 seconds left in the game but Fairleigh Dickinson
sealed the victory making its final five free throw attempts. Trailing
36-33 at the half, the Mount came out shooting well, out-scoring the Knights
14-5 and taking a six point lead, 47-41, with 12:41 left climaxed by a three
pointer from Adasi. Adasi was nine of 15 from the field including five of eight
from beyond the three-point line. The
Mount opened the contest with a lead that it would not relinquish until Felton
hit a three-pointer with 1:17 left in the half to give Fairleigh Dickinson a
34-32 lead. Felton had 16 of his 17 in the first frame. The Mount led by as many
as eight points in the first half behind the 12 first half points from Adasi and
seven from sophomore Pat Atangana. Atangana would finish the game with 11 points
and 12 rebounds. Hammond
gave the Knights 12 points and six boards, while junior Iman Mattox (Hayward,
Calif.) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. "We
started off slow but our offense and defense put it together at the same time
today," said Knights' head coach Tom Green.
"Mensah had a great game and we got great efforts from everyone else
as well."
Fairleigh Dickinson returns to action on Monday night at UMBC with a 7:00
p.m. tip-off.
