Men's Soccer Knocks Off Akron, 2-1 at UConn Soccer Classic
Hurtado's header in the 87th minute gives the Knights their first win of the season.

STORRS, CONN. The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team captured its first win of the season, knocking off Akron by a score of 2-1 at the UConn Soccer Classic this evening. Senior forward Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) scored the game winner with a diving header in the 87th minute.

"Tonight we played very good soccer," said head coach Seth Roland. "When we possessed the ball we created numerous opportunities and played in a poised manner. We scored two great goals and defended very well. This was a good win against a very good team."

Junior forward Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) gave the Knights (1-1-0) a 1-0 lead at 30:46. Paye collected a long pass over the defense from Johnny David (Hillside, N.J.) and put it past Akron keeper Matt Balkanloo. The Zips, who tied defending national champion UConn, 3-3 on Friday, knotted the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute when Alex Odwell converted a penalty kick.

The contest remained tied for the next 46 minutes and seemed headed for overtime until the Knights got a corner kick and after a short pass, Danny Lozano (Bogota, Colombia) sent a cross in front where Hurtado punched his header past Balkanloo's reach.

Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) was solid in goal for the Knights as he made five saves to earn the win. Balkanloo made nine stops for the Zips.

Fairleigh Dickinson completed its appearance at the UConn Soccer Classic with a 1-1 record, falling to the 12th ranked Washington Huskies, 3-2 in overtime on Friday night before responding with tonight's big win. "We competed very well tonight as well as against Washington," said Roland. "We almost stole a win last night but weren't fortunate enough. What was nice to see is that we showed we can be dangerous and sharp on the attack."

The Knights return to action on Wednesday, September 5, when they host Drexel at 4:00 p.m. in their home opener.
