September 9, 2001 Men's
Soccer Falls 3-1 to Long Island in NEC Opener BROOKLYN, N.Y. Long Island University (2-1-1, 1-0-0 NEC) scored three unanswered goals to hand the Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team (2-2-0, 0-1-0 NEC) a 3-1 defeat this afternoon in both teams' Northeast Conference opener. Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) scored the Knights' lone goal of the game, his team-leading fifth of the season. Paye gave the Knights an early boost, scoring in the eighth minute. Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) gave Paye a feed from the left side to the middle and he found the low right side of the net to put Fairleigh Dickinson up 1-0. Just over four minutes later Oskar Tilly scored for the Blackbirds on a pass from David Schofield to knot the game a 1-1. The contest remained tied until the 44th minute when Matt Paradise gave Long Island a 2-1 advantage heading into the break as he controlled a long serve by Jonas Stigh and connected from 25 yards out. Both teams had several opportunities in the second half, but neither team could convert until the 75th minute when Tilly put the game away with his second goal, this one on an assist by Kristoffer Engdahl. Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) did all he could to keep the Knights in the game, making nine saves in goal. His counterpart, Eric Masters, made four stops for the Blackbirds.
The Knights will return
to action on Thursday, September 13, when they take on intra-state foe
Princeton on the road at 7:30 p.m.
