Fairleigh Dickinson Men’s Soccer Tops UMBC, 3-2
Hurtado scores game-winner, Paye scores a goal and assists on two.

Teaneck, N.J. – Junior forward Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) scored the game-winner and junior forward Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead the Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over visiting UMBC today.  The Knights improved to 6-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the NEC.  UMBC fell to 6-3-1 overall and 3-2-0 in NEC play.

Sophomore midfielder Nate Olson (Maple Grove, Minn.) struck first for the Knights, scoring on a cross from the left side by Paye just 3:16 into the contest.  Paye then gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute on a long clear by sophomore midfielder Sergio Riquelme (Montreal, Quebec), a lead the Knights took into halftime.

UMBC came out more aggressive in the second frame, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the 51st minute as junior midfielder Alex Wilmot (Washington, D.C.) punched in a cross from senior midfielder P.J. Wakefield (Baltimore, Md.).  The Retrievers continued to pressure the Knights’ goal, but couldn’t convert.  Hurtado gave the Knights another two-goal lead in the 82nd minute on a combination by Paye and senior midfielder Brian Romero (Paterson, N.J.) off a free-kick.  UMBC answered again in the 85th minute when Wilmot picked up a ball on the goal line and fed Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md.) to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Retrievers could pull no closer.

Knights’ goalkeeper Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) made several point blank saves, finishing with eight for the contest.  UMBC goalkeeper Brian Rowland (Toronto, Ontario) stopped four shots.  The Retrievers out-shot Fairleigh Dickinson by a margin of 18-11.

“I thought we competed well today and we were very focused,” said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland.  “We fought hard and were very deserving of this win against a good team.”

The Knights return to action on Sunday, October 7, when they host Mount St. Mary’s at 1:00 p.m. in another key Northeast Conference game.
