Knights Blank Mount St. Mary’s, 1-0
Knights win third straight on Sergio Riquelme’s goal in 62nd minute.

Teaneck, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Sergio Riquelme (Montreal, Quebec) scored on a free-kick in the 62nd minute to lift the Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over visiting Mount St. Mary’s this afternoon.  The win was the Knights’ third straight as they improved to 7-5-1 overall and stayed atop the NEC standings at 4-2-0 in league play.  The Mount fell to 4-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the NEC.

Fairleigh Dickinson controlled the ball for most of the first half, out-shooting the Mount 7-0, but Mount goalkeeper Brian Crum (Frederick, Md.) made three big saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.

In the 62nd minute, Fairleigh Dickinson junior forward Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) was pulled down on a break away just outside the top of the box, giving the Knights a free-kick.  Riquelme successfully converted, putting it over the outstretched Crum and under the cross bar for what would be the game-winner, his second goal of the season.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and just need one chance,” said Riquelme.  “We got that chance, I felt confident and we put it in.”

Crum finished the match with five saves.  Knights’ goalkeeper Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) made four saves to post his third shutout of the season and eighth of his career.

“We maintained focus today as we did against UMBC on Friday,” said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland.  “We’re playing well now and we’ll look to continue that as we head down the stretch here.”

The Knights return to action on Saturday, October 13, when they host William & Mary at 1:00 p.m.  The Tribe are currently ranked 21st in the nation.
