Paye, Lenkutis Lift Knights to 1-0, Triple Overtime Thriller Over Boston College In NCAA 1st Round
Fairleigh Dickinson to face #12 Princeton in second round on Sunday at 1pm

Princeton, N.J. – Junior forward Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) leads the team in scoring, but no goal was bigger than his 15th of the season in the 122nd minute to lift Fairleigh Dickinson University (15-6-0) to a thrilling 1-0 win over Boston College (10-8-0) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament.  Their reward will be a date with host Princeton, ranked 12th in the country, in the second round on Sunday, November 23rd, at 1:00 p.m. The Knights dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Tigers back on September 15, at Princeton.

Freshman Joe DiBuono (Montreal, Canada) fed Paye with a pass down the left side to begin the play.  He carried the ball towards the corner past one defender and as Eagle goalkeeper Danny Caruso came out to cut down the angle, Paye sent a shot low past his left side for the game-winner.

“I had a chance in the first overtime to win the game, but came up short,” said Paye.  “When I had that last chance I made it happen this time. All day I was beating them down the line and Joe played it down the line.  Fortunately their guy slipped a bit, the ball ended up on my feet and I just put it in.”

After the first 90 minutes of the game resulted in a stalemate, and the Knights playing a man down since the 81st minute, play opened up.  Just 1:30 into the first extra frame, junior forward Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) fed Paye who fired a shot from the upper right corner of the box, but Caruso came out to successfully stop the attempt.  Knights’ goalkeeper Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) was equal to the task, making a big punch save 6:42 into the overtime on a blast by Chris Cleary.

The Knights got another chance with 8:45 left in the second overtime as a Boston College foul resulted in a direct kick from 25 yards out where sophomore midfielder Sergio Riquelme’s (Montreal, Canada) shot went just over the crossbar.  Lenkutis had to come up with one more diving save on a shot from 10 yards out by Adam Pfeifer.

Lenkutis finished the game with six saves, while Caruso stopped five shots.  The Eagles held the shot advantage, 20-17, for the game.

The win is the Knights’ eight in a row and 11th in the last 12 outings.  It also marks the first NCAA Tournament win since the 1988 season.
