Knights
Upset #12 Princeton, 2-1, to Advance Princeton,
N.J.
– Aaron Paye (Brooklyn
Center, Minn.) tallied
the game-winning goal at 79:27 and picked up an assist as the Knights of
Fairleigh Dickinson upset the 12th ranked Princeton Tigers, 2-1 in
the second round of the 2001 NCAA Men's College Cup. Fairleigh Dickinson
stands at 16-6-0 overall with their ninth straight win and will meet Seton
Hall in the third round of the tournament. Princeton finishes the season with
a record of 10-3-5. The
Tigers hounded the Knights' goal in the first half, out-shooting Fairleigh
Dickinson, 10-2 yet were unable to find the back of the net. In the last few
minutes of the opening half, Lucas Moskowitz had a shot go off the left
post. Nate
Olson (Maple Grove, Minn.),
put the Knights up 1-0 in the 53rd minute when he took a cross off a restart
and headed it in far post past the Princeton keeper, Jason White. Paye,
from the right side of the Tiger 18, hit a line drive cross into the box. Olson
was able to gain position and redirect the ball for the goal, his second of
the season. “We
worked on a play similar to that all year and we kind of know where each other
is at,” said Olson. “I
tried to get near post, get my head on it and it went in.” Princeton's
best chance to even the score came in the 58th minute when Ryan Rich
was taken down in the Knights' box. Princeton was awarded a penalty kick and Matt
Behncke was selected to take the shot. Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper Vytautas
Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania), dove to the right, but Behncke's
shot sailed to the upper-left corner, hit the post and went out of bounds. Paye
scored his second goal of the tournament when a long ball played from
Fairleigh Dickinson’s Orce Kozeski (Garfield, N.J.) in the backfield
bounced over a Princeton defender. Paye
took advantage of the break-away situation and chipped the ball past White. “We
knew we needed to put another one in there,” said Paye.
“Guys were counting on me. I
went out to get a quick breather, came back in and the ball slipped through. I got through and had to finish this one and put it in for us
to put it away.” Marty
Shaw scored the Princeton
goal at 86:31 when his shot from the far right side found the upper-left
corner of the goal, out of the reach of Lenkutis. The Tigers had one
more opportunity to score with 10 seconds left, but Lenkutis was in
position to stop the final attempt. Princeton out-shot Fairleigh Dickinson 19
to 10. Lenkutis made six
saves on the day, while White stopped four shots for Princeton. “It’s kind of a huge win,” said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland on the magnitude of the victory. “To be playing in the sweet 16 brings tremendous credibility to our program. It’s a nice testament to our players that we were able to beat such a good team. Princeton is a very, very good team. During the season I’m a big fan of how they play, they play well, at a high level and they’re very successful. It’s not easy beating a team of that caliber.” The
victory by the Knights marks only the second time in program history (1983)
that they have advanced past the second round.
