Fairleigh Dickinson Men’s Soccer Falls to North Carolina, 3-2 in 3OT
Knights Take Tar Heels to the wire in NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, finish memorable season at 17-7-0.

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s soccer storybook run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end today with a 3-2, triple-overtime defeat at eighth-ranked North Carolina in the quarterfinals.  The deciding tally came on an own goal in the 126th minute.  The Knights, who advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1984 and only the third time in program history, closed out their memorable season with a 17-7-0 record.  North Carolina improved to 19-4-0 as they advanced to the Final Four.

“It was an incredible game played by two very good teams,” said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland.  “Carolina comes out and wears you down, yet there’s no quit in our guys.  It was an incredible season, an incredible run, and I couldn’t be prouder.  I have an overwhelming feeling of pride and appreciation towards my team.”

Junior forward Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) scored in the 19th minute to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead that the they carried into the second half.  North Carolina defender Danny Jackson had tried to clear the ball, but Paye deflected the attempted clear into the goal past North Carolina keeper Michael Ueltschey for the lead. The goal was the first the Tar Heels had given up in three NCAA Tournament games.

The Knights’ lead lasted until the 73rd minute when Ryan Kneipper headed a long pass from Ray Fumo to tie the score at 1-1.  Kneipper gave the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead less than five minutes later as he scored on another header off a long cross from Mike Gell.

The Knights trailed 2-1 going into the final minute of regulation, but tied it on a penalty kick by junior forward Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, N.J.) with 31 seconds to play after a North Carolina handball in the box and forced the extra periods.  Paye had battled North Carolina defender David Stokes in the box when Stokes slipped and fell to the ground.  Stokes’ arm landed on the ball, resulting in the penalty kick.

The Tar Heels out-shot the Knights by a 43-6 margin and held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, but senior goalkeeper Vytautas Lenkutis (Vilnius, Lithuania) tied a season-high with 13 saves for Fairleigh Dickinson.  Ueltschey made one stop for the Tar Heels.
