FDU’s Matthieu Savaria Invited to Canadian Olympic Team Training Camp
Knights’ Freshman defender one of 18 selected by Canadian Soccer Association

TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson, Matthieu Savaria (Montreal, Quebec), a member of the men’s soccer team, has been invited to Canada’s National U23 Olympic Team training camp to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Savaria was one of 18 players chosen to participate in the camp from February 26 – March 8. The group will be training for a shot at the final team that will represent Canada in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Savaria, a 5-foot-9 freshman, was a key component in the Knights’ Cinderella run to the Elite Eight of the 2001 NCAA Tournament.  He played in all 24 games, starting 23, in a backfield that helped the team post a 1.17 goals against average.  Savaria also chipped in a goal and an assist on the offensive end.  His lone goal of the season was the game-winner in double-overtime as the Knights knocked off Columbia, ranked 22nd in the country at the time.

“I’m not the least bit surprised with Matthieu’s invitation to train for the Canadian Olympic Team,” said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland. “He is an outstanding right-back who even as a freshman distinguished himself to be a top-notch college defender.”

The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team posted a 17-7 overall record on the year and finished ranked 11th in the country, the program’s highest national ranking since the 1983 team finished number three and first ranking since 1989.  After finishing the regular season at 8-2-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play for a share of their second straight regular season title, the Knights went on to capture a second straight NEC Tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1989.

Fairleigh Dickinson defeated highly regarded Boston College, 1-0, in triple-overtime in the first round before knocking off 12th-ranked Princeton, 2-1, in the second round. They pulled off another upset in the third round with a 1-0 defeat of Seton Hall.  The Knights fell to eventual national champion in the quarterfinals, 3-2, but not before taking them into triple-overtime.
