Alex

Men’s soccer assistant played
instrumental role in run to NCAA Elite Eight.
TEANECK,
N.J. – Alex Passucci, an assistant men’s soccer coach at
Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been nominated for the AFLAC National
Assistant Coach of the Year Award. High
schools and colleges nationwide have been invited to nominate candidates for
this new and unique award program, which is designed to honor some of the
truly unsung heroes of American team sports.
Passucci has been an integral part of the program as an
assistant coach for eight years after being a three-year starter for the
Knights from 1988-91. He has managed to balance his coaching while serving as a
full-time physical education teacher for children with learning disabilities.
“Alex is a tactical genius who has an innate feel for the game,”
said Knights’ head coach Seth Roland who was named Mid-Atlantic Coach
of the Year. “He has played a critical role in the coaching and
implementation of our 4-4-2 system of play that was the foundation of our run
to the 2001 NCAA Elite Eight and a #11 national ranking.”
The program, which is administered by Scholastic Coach &
Athletic Director magazine, the bible of the coaching profession since
1931, will select up to 500 male and female winners in all sports from the
thousands who will be nominated. A
blue-ribbon panel of top prep sportswriters from across the country will be
responsible for the final selections. Winners will be selected according to a
list of criteria, including longevity, knowledge, long-term successes, special
contributions to the school and/or community, and overcoming obstacles, among
others. The winners will be announced on May 1, 2002.
“AFLAC has always supported athletics at all levels,” said AFLAC
Senior Vice President, Joe Kuechenmeister. “We are delighted with this
opportunity to recognize amazing contributions from assistant high school and
college coaches, who are among the true heroes of sport. Each winner will
receive a special award from an AFLAC representative.”
The AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award should become
highly sought by assistant coaches everywhere. With more than 350,000
assistant coaches nationwide, the award will be highly selective.
