Dickinson Honors Student-Athletes at 47th Annual Awards
Banquet
Hackensack,
N.J. – The
Fairleigh Dickinson University Athletics Department honored its
student-athletes on Thursday evening at the 47th Annual Athletics
Awards Banquet held at the Rothman Center in Hackensack. Junior Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) and
sophomore Natallia Marchanka (Rechitsa, Belarus) were named the
Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year, earning top
athletics honors. Junior women’s tennis athlete Marisa Puga (Chihuahua, Mexico) received the George Braun Alumni Leadership Award for her combination of dedication to her sport, work in the classroom, school spirit and her commitment to community. Senior women’s tennis athlete Elina Magid (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned the Mary Kay Stratis Award and senior men’s track and field athlete Aidan Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) earned the Robert Metz Award. Both awards are given to the graduating male and female seniors with the highest cumulative grade point average. The Office of the Provost received the H. Rogers Muse Service Award for its outstanding contributions to the athletics department. Finally, for the fourth straight year, the women’s tennis team won the Roy Danforth Award, presented to the team with the highest grade point average. Paye
enjoyed one of the most successful individual seasons in recent memory
while helping the men’s soccer team to the most thrilling season the
Fairleigh Dickinson athletics department has seen in recent memory.
He electrified fans and dazzled opponents to tally a
league-leading 42 points on 17 goals and eight assists. In four NCAA
Tournament games he totaled three goals and two assists, recording at
least one point in each contest as he helped lead the team to the NCAA
Tournament Elite Eight and a final NSCAA national ranking of 11.
For his efforts Paye earned All-Northeast Conference
First Team and All-Mid-Atlantic First Team honors and was named NSCAA
and Collegesoccernews.com Third Team All-American. Marchanka
helped lead the women’s basketball team to 14 wins this year,
including an 88-58 romp of St. John’s, the program’s first win
over a BIG EAST opponent since 1991-92.
She helped excite home court fans as the Knights posted a 10-2
mark at the Rothman Center while she ranked among the league leaders
in scoring (17.2 ppg), three-pointers (56), assists (4.6 apg) and
steals (2.0). Marchanka
was named First Team All-NEC, Second Team All-Metropolitan and team
Most Valuable Player. During
her time at Fairleigh Dickinson, Puga has been a leader both on
and off the court. On the
court this year she finished 14-4 in singles action, playing at the
number one and two spots. She
went 10-1 this spring with her lone loss coming in a three-set
tiebreaker against Princeton and she lost just two of 19 sets this
spring. Puga
stands out off the court as well, serving as Fairleigh Dickinson
Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative to the NEC
and National SAAC representative for the NEC.
She is a regular participant in campus service projects and
national conference calls to discuss issues concerning
student-athletes. A loyal
supporter of other athletic teams and organizations on campus, this
Dean’s List Student and active member of the Hotel & Restaurant
Management Club with a 3.53 GPA became
a vocal leader for the women’s tennis team and the athletic
department. Magid
and Walsh were honored as the top graduating female and male
student-athletes, respectively. Magid is
a regular on the Dean’s List and currently has a GPA of 3.72, while
working towards a degree in economics and finance.
She was a key member of the Knights’ women’s tennis team,
posting eight singles wins, including five against NEC opponents.
She also put together a 13-4 record at first doubles with Puga
and went 11-3 against NEC foes. Walsh
carries a current GPA of 3.36, while also majoring in economics and
finance. He has been one
of the most consistent athletes for the Knights over his four years,
has earned All-East five times, won four NEC track event titles and
finished in the top eight on six other occasions. Walsh has
been named All-NEC at the last three NEC Cross Country Championships
and has earned conference academic honors for each of his three
eligible years. The
Office of the Provost
has played an integral role in the overall success of Knights’
Athletics. The
contributions made by this office towards the growth and development
of the athletics department is immeasurable.
This office has given teams exciting programs such as Family
Days, pre-game student brunches, Faculty/Staff Nights, pep rallies and
fan buses to post-season events.
The Office of the Provost has helped brand the
metropolitan campus as “The Home of The Knights” and brought us
the Knight Mascot, key signage and a highly visible message board.
Through these and other efforts, including the inaugural
Provost’s Challenge, these loyal supporters have helped integrate
the entire student population into the Knights’ exciting athletics
programs. In
addition to the seven major awards presented on Thursday evening, each
team presented a Most Valuable Player award and also honored its
