Knights Sweep NEC Women's and Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week

Somerset, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's and men's tennis teams swept the Northeast Conference (NEC) Athletes of the Week awards for the last week of the spring season. Lorena Parra and Alex Sarria each earned their first awards this spring as the Knights prepare for the 2002 NEC Tennis Championships later this week.  Both players are sophomores and both hail from Cali, Colombia.

Parra will enter the NEC Women's Tennis tournament on a roll, having won nine straight matches at #1 singles to close out the regular season.  Last week the sophomore was dominant in wins over Princeton's Jessica Leutsinger (6-1, 6-0) and Sacred Heart's Tricia Dacey (6-0, 6-1).  Parra finished the spring with a 9-1 singles record and 6-5 doubles mark.

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team enters the 2002 NEC Championships on a high note, due in part to the strong play of Sarria, the team's #1 flight singles player.  While the Knights have won six straight matches and are seeded #2 in the tournament, Sarria himself is in the midst of an eight-match singles win streak. Last week the sophomore stopped Princeton's Clayton Apgar, 6-0, 6-0, and Sacred Heart's Marjan Kaljaj, 6-4, 6-2. He improved to 16-9 on the year and is 8-1 this spring.  Sarria also teamed with George Green to capture two #1 doubles matches last week. 

The 2002 NEC Women's and Men's Tennis Championships are being held concurrently at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. in a team flighted, partial consolation format beginning Thursday, April 25th through Saturday, April 27th. The #9 seeded women's team will face #9 seed St. Francis (NY) on Thursday while on Friday the #2 seeded Knights' men's team will play the winner of the Central Connecticut/Mt. St. Mary's match-up.
