Fairleigh Dickinson University to Add Women’s Bowling
Knights add emerging sport as 18th varsity program in 2002-03.

TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson University Director of Athletics, Steve Hurlbut, has announced the addition of a NCAA women’s bowling program that will begin competition in the 2002-03 academic year.  The women’s bowling program will give the Knights a total of 18 intercollegiate varsity sports and will be the third addition during Hurlbut’s tenure (women’s soccer – 2000, softball 2001). The program will call Bowler City in Hackensack as its home facility and a search for a head coach is underway.

“Women’s bowling is an emerging sport and we’ve been planning to add a third sport for some time now,” said Hurlbut. “There’s a lot of outstanding youth and high school bowling in northern New Jersey and with the proximity of the Bowler City complex in Hackensack, bowling seemed like the perfect choice.”

Fairleigh Dickinson becomes the 40th NCAA institution in the country to sponsor a varsity women’s bowling program and will have scholarship money available. Under NCAA guidelines, that total will make it an official NCAA Championship event within the next two years.  The Knights will be competing in a Metropolitan area rich with a number of strong and nationally recognized bowling programs.

“We’re very grateful with the response and encouragement received from the management of Bowler City and we believe the quality of the facility will enhance our recruiting efforts and help us build a strong foundation for the program for years to come,” concluded Hurlbut.
