Dickinson University Places 10th Overall in
Commissioner's Cup Standings
Men's programs take sixth, women finish
10th.
HACKENSACK,
N.J. -- The Northeast Conference
has announced its 2001-02 Commissioner's Cup standings. Fairleigh Dickinson
University finished tenth overall and tenth for the women's cup, and finished
sixth for the men's cup. UMBC placed first overall and in the women's
standings and Monmouth took first for the men's.
On
the men's side, the Knights were able to clinch a place in the top half of the
standings with the great success of three of its teams.
In the fall, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team tied for first
in the league with Robert Morris, as they went on a Cinderella run to the NCAA
Elite Eight. The men's cross country team and the men's tennis team both
finished their seasons in second place.
The
Knights saw all but two women’s sports place between fourth and ninth.
Women's volleyball posted a 12-11 record, qualifying for the NEC
tournament. Women's basketball
finished 14-14. Women's soccer,
softball, cross country, and track and field all improved their finishes in
the NEC standings from last year.
The
Commissioner's Cup was instituted during the 1986-87 season with Fairleigh
Dickinson leading all schools with six championships.
Cup points are awarded in each NEC sponsored sport.
For men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, women's
volleyball, football, women's softball, women's field hockey, women's lacrosse
and baseball, the final regular season standings are used to determine Cup
points. In all other sports,
points are awarded based on the finish at NEC Championship events.
