Men's Cross Country Finishes Sixth at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals
Erick Too finishes eighth overall to qualify for NCAA National Championships

BETHLEHEM, PA – The Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s cross country teams posted their best finish in several years with a sixth place team mark at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, held on the campus of Lehigh University.  Despite coming in a close second to St. Francis (PA) at the Northeast Conference Championships, the Knights bested the Red Flash by four team places.

The men’s team was led by junior Erick Too (Eldoret, Kenya) who has been the Knights top finisher in every race in 2001.  He posted an eighth place individual finish, running in 30:51.75 and qualifying for a spot at Nationals.  The top two teams and the top four individuals from non-qualifying teams from each regional championship advance to the NCAA Championships.

Possibly making the difference for Fairleigh Dickinson’s outstanding team showing was sophomore Robert Rotich (Kericho, Kenya), who has been the Knights’ fourth or fifth finisher in each race this season.  He came in second for the Knights, posting a 27th place finish at Regionals (31:26.97).  Alfred Korir (Kapsabet, Kenya) placed 30th (31:33.32), Aidan Walsh (Dublin, Ireland) came in 35th in 31:40.15 and Duncan Bitok (Rift Valley, Kenya) placed 54th in 31:59.73.

The women’s squad did not compete as a team but Fredyla Urena (Fairview, NJ/Cliffside Park) and Seeyian Metoyu (Illasit, Kenya) competed individually.  Urena finished in 94th place out of 180 competitors in a time of 23:21.89.  Metoyu ran a 24:38.38 coming in 143rd.

Too will travel to Furman University in Greenville, SC to compete at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, November 19th.  This marks the second consecutive year the Knights have had someone qualify for Nationals.  In 2000, Stephen Ondieki was the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champion and went on to earn All-America honors for his second place finish at the NCAA Championships.

The rest of the Fairleigh Dickinson men’s squad and the entire women’s squad will travel to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY, for the IC4A and ECAC Championships on Saturday, November 17th.
