Knights Favored to Claim NEC Men's Cross Country Title
Fairleigh Dickinson Seeks First Title Since 1994

Piscataway, NJ -- Fairleigh Dickinson University has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2001 NEC Menıs Cross Country Championship, according to a poll of league head coaches.

Head coach Pete Squires returns five all-NEC performers in hopes of claiming the Knights first title since 1994. Fairleigh Dickinson won six of seven NEC Championships from 1988-1994, including an NEC record five consecutive titles from 1990-94. In order to claim its seventh crown, Fairleigh Dickinson will need to hold off two-time defending champion St. Francis (PA).

Even with the departure of All-American performer Stephen Ondieki, the Knights still return as the preseason favorite in the conference. Fairleigh Dickinsonıs five returning lettermen finished the 2000 NEC Championships in spots six through eleven, as each earned all-NEC recognition. Sophomore Alfred Korir (Kapsabet, Kenya/Samoei Secondary) took home NEC Freshman of the Year honors, after finishing the 8K course at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain with a time of 26:10.4, at the championship. Junior Erick Too (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapngetuny) finished in seventh place (26:12.3), followed by seniors Aidan Walsh (Dublin, Ireland/The High School) and Francis Kipkuna (Kabarnet, Kenya/Kapkawa Boyıs), who placed ninth (26.26.1) and tenth (26:29.9), respectively. Sophomore Robert Rotich (Kericho, Kenya/Nakuru) rounded out the contingent with a time of 26:31.2, which was good for the eleventh individual spot in the championship.

The 2001 NEC Menıs and Womenıs Championship will take place on Saturday, October 27th at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, PA. All twelve NEC schools will compete in the championship, with Robert Morris College serving as the host institution.
