Place Fifth, Men Finish Sixth at 2002 NEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships
Everlyn Cheptoo named
Most Outstanding Track Performer after two individual titles
EMMITSBURG,
MD – The
Fairleigh Dickinson University women's track and field team finished
fifth with 62 points while the men’s team scored 66 for sixth place at
the 2002 Outdoor Northeast Conference Championships, combining for five
individual titles and one relay championship. St. Francis (PA) won the
men’s championship with 181 points while Monmouth won the women’s
championship with 137 points.
Everlyn
Cheptoo blew by
her competition in the 5000 meters 10,000 meters to earn Most
Outstanding Track Performer on the women’s side. On day one she took
the 10K with an ECAC qualifying and school record time of 36:30.56. Day
two she won the 5K in 17:35.12 for a total 20 points. Dana White
was the next highest finisher for the women, placing second in the shot
put with a throw of 13.48 meters (44-2.75). Melanie Porterfield finished
third in the 400m hurdles in 1:03.01 and fourth in the 100m hurdles in
14.85 seconds. Fredyla Urena bested her school record with a
fourth place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase (11:49.97).
Calicia
Burke finished
sixth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.33 meters (17-6)
while Tia Wright had an eighth place leap of 5.31 meters
(17-5.25). The team of Cheptoo, Burke, Fredyla Urena and Seeyian
Metoyu got five points with a fourth place finish in the 4x800m
relay.
The 4x100m
relay team of White, Porterfield, Destiny Morris, and Ebony
Ramos placed fifth in 49.27 seconds.
The
men’s team took three individual titles including Erick Too’s
win in the 10,000m in 30:17.24. He also placed fifth in the 500m in
14:55.39. Aidan Walsh won the 1500m in 3:52.28 and Alfred
Korir won the 800m in 1:52.50. Walsh finished fourth in the 800m
(1:54.63) and Korir finished fourth in the 1500m (3:53.23). Duncan
Bitok added an eighth place finish in the 1500m (3:59.73). Robert
Rotich came in second in the 3000m Steeplechase (9:11.28) and
finished sixth in the 500m (14:57.66). The relay team of Walsh, Korir,
Bitok and Rotich won the 4x800m relay in 7:44.78.
The
Knights are next in action at the Metropolitan Championships on Friday,
May 10th and Saturday, May 11th.
