Thursday, March 14, 2002 Men's
Track and Field Picked Fourth in NEC Preseason Poll SOMERSET,
NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University men’s outdoor track
and field team was picked to finish fourth, according to a preseason
poll of Northeast Conference (NEC) head coaches, while the women’s
squad was picked to finish sixth. On the men’s side, defending
champion St. Francis (PA) is the preseason favorite with nine first
place votes followed by Monmouth with three first place votes. Long
Island will be looking for their first women’s outdoor title after
winning indoors in 2002 and garnering seven first-place votes.
Monmouth followed with four votes while
UMBC came in third with one first place tally. The
men’s team will attempt to continue their success after a fourth
place finish last season at outdoors and a fifth place finish this
past outdoor season.
Aidan Walsh led the way at the NEC Indoor Championships by
winning the mile and scoring in three other events (800m, 3000m,
Distance Medley Relay). The
women’s squad, after posting their best finish in three seasons at
the NEC Indoor Championships, is picked to finish sixth.
Last season they finished 11th at outdoors but with
returning indoor individual champions Everlyn Cheptoo (3000m and
5000m) and Calicia Burke (Long Jump) the Knights are sure to make an
impact in 2002. The
Knights open their outdoor season at the Virginia Commonwealth
Invitational in Richmond, Va. on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March
23.
The Northeast Conference Championships will be held the first
weekend in May in Emmitsburg, Maryland at the campus of Mt. St.
Mary’s. 2002
