Knights
end 2001 season 12-11
Staten
Island, New York
– Fairleigh Dickinson earned a hard-fought five-set victory over
fifth-seeded Quinnipiac to advance to face top-seeded Central
Connecticut where they fell in four games.
MATCH
ONE RECAP
The
Knights edged Quinnipiac 3-2 (23-30, 31-29, 30-23, 23-30, 15-13) in
one of the most exciting matches the NEC Tournament has ever seen.
Over
the course of the back and fourth match, Fairleigh Dickinson had
four players with double-digit kills, led by sophomore Kristin
Risberg (Port Jefferson, NY) who tallied a career-high 20.
Sophomore Sharon Becker (Dumont, NJ) drilled 14 kills for the
victors while junior Allison Picker (San Rafael, CA) and
senior Trisha Nunnenkamp (Merrick, NY) chipped in with 11 and
ten kills apiece.
Nunnenkamp paved the way defensively with a match-high 17
digs, while Picker posted nine blocks. Senior setter Randi
Kluemper (Allentown, PA) almost tallied a triple-double with
eight kills, 50 assists and 15 digs. Becker and sophomore Nicole
Farrell (Warwick, NY) added 14 digs apiece while freshman Heather
Galaydick (Hackensack, NJ) chipped in with 12 digs.
Quinnipiac,
who finishes the season 9-14, was led by Holly Wollyung who posted
team-highs in 33 kills, 16 digs and 14 blocks.
MATCH
TWO RECAP
After
the five-game battle, the Knights advanced later to play top-seeded
Central Connecticut and fell 3-1 (15-30, 30-17, 23-30, 23-30).
As the Knights were handled readily in game one, they recovered to
easily take game two from the Blue Devils for the 1-1 draw.
Fairleigh Dickinson managed leads in both game three and four but
could not overcome several of their match's 11 service errors and
the consistent hitting from the Blue Devils.
Becker
paced the Knights with team-highs of 15 kills and 16 digs.
Picker drilled nine kills, three service aces and put up
three blocks.
Senior
co-captains Kluemper and Nunnenkamp finished their
four-year careers high on the Knights' all-time lists. Nunnenkamp
finishes second on the all-time digs list with 1,509 and fourth on
the all-time kills list with 826. Kluemper finishes fifth on
the all-time service aces list with 140 and fourth on the all-time
assist list with 1,275. She also was named a member of the 2001
Verizon Academic All-American District 2 Volleyball Team.
