NEW BRITAIN, CT --Melanie Prol scored her 1000th career point as the Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team beat Central Connecticut State in a crucial NEC game, last night. Prol finished the game with 11 points
Fairleigh Dickinson grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a layup from Prol, and held their last lead of the first half, 9-8, on a Karen Tiedemann bucket from Natallia Marchanka with 14:37 left before halftime, they hung around to grab their final lead in regulation, 60-59, on Marchanka's second three-pointer of the night with 0:47 left. CCSU's Morgan Perry made the second of two free throws for the 60-60 deadlock with 0:18 left in the second half, and the Blue Devils had a chance to snap the tie and win the game with 0:01 left, but the shot wouldn't fall.
The Knights opened the overtime on a Marchanka layup, and after a 64-64 tie on a Zyhier basket, padded their advantage to four, 68-64, on a pair of Tiedemann buckets. The closest the Blue Devils could get was two, 68-66, with 2:09 left to play. Betsy Blom and Tiedemann each came up with key blocks late in the overtime period to preserve the win for the visitors.
Tiedemann and Zyhier tied for game-high honors with 23 points each. Zyhier hit 11-10 and 1-2, along with game-high 15 rebounds and four steals in 38 minutes. Joining Tiedemann in double figures for Fairleigh Dickinson (10-15, 9-7) were Marchanka with 12 points and Meaghan Allan with 11. The Knights have now won the last three meetings in the 11-game series.
