BOXSCORE

Knights Down St. Francis (NY) 88-78
Nevin Caple scores career-high 20 to lead five players in double-digits

Hackensack, NJ -- The Fairleigh Dickinson (8-5, 3-1 NEC) women’s basketball team and St. Francis (NY) (2-11, 0-4 NEC) each had five players in double-figure but the Knights built a first-half lead from which the Terriers could not come back and took their fourth home game with their highest scoring output this season, 88-78.

With the game tied 8-8 at the 17:02 mark the Knights scored the next five points to start a 13-6 run that gave them the lead for good.  Fairleigh Dickinson kept the Terriers in a double-digit deficit from that point until 2:07 remained in the game and St. Francis (NY) scored on five consecutive possessions to give the Knights a good scare and get within six (84-78) with just over a minute remaining.  The Terriers missed their last three shots and the Knights’ Nevin Caple (Baltimore, MD) grabbed each rebound to get three free trips to the foul line in the last :22 of the game.

The teams combined for eight three-pointers in the first ten minutes of the game and kept up their hot outside shooting in the first half with the Knights going 8-of-13 compared to the Terriers’ 6-of-13 in the first session.  The second half was a different story for the Knights as they went 2-of-10 from behind the arc and shot just 52.4% (11-of-21) at the free throw line.

“Today we once again had a great balanced effort for an important conference win,” says FDU head coach Sandy Gordon Gaglioti.  “Teams think that they need to shut Tash [NEC-leading scorer Natallia Marchanka] down but we have other players that step up.  St. Francis needs to be commended for being a tougher team than their record reflects.  We’re now looking to keep our home win streak intact when we face LIU on Monday.”

Four other Knights added double-figures to Caple’s 20 including freshman Kay Odenwaelder (Goshen, CT) who came off the bench to post a big 14 rebounds with 13 points in just 23 minutes for her third double-double of the season.  Her 14 boards are a career- and game-high in addition to a Knight team-high this season.  Natallia Marchanka (Rechitsa, Belarus) had 16 points, Meaghan Allan (Millersville, MD) had 14 points (4-of-7 three pointers) and a career-high seven assists, and Erin Mills (Wilmington, DE) came in with 11 points.

Colleen Carbone (Nashua, NH) led St. Francis (NY) with 16 points and three steals while Kim Weir (Dollard DesOrmeaux, Quebec) scored 13 points and shared a team-high five rebounds with Caitlin O’Malley (Doylestown, PA) who added 10 points.  The Terriers iced 19-of-21 (90.5%) from the free throw line and finished 11-of-21 from downtown (52.4%)

The Knights look to remain undefeated in the Rothman Center as they face the 2001 NEC Tournament Champion LIU Blackbirds on Monday, January 14th for a 7:00 p.m. game.
