Dickinson Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener against Georgetown, 69-42 Washington,
D.C. – The
Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s basketball team (1-0)
dropped a 69-42 decision at Georgetown University (1-0) in both
teams’ season opener.
The
Hoyas took a quick lead, connecting on their first six field goals
to score sixteen points before the Knights could answer at 14:37
with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Natallia Marchanka (Rechitsa,
Belarus/Republic School of Olympic Reserve). Fairleigh
Dickinson was able to shutdown the Hoya offense for the last 7:37 of
the first half, while scoring 11 points to go into halftime behind
by a 34-23 deficit. The
Knights missed five field goal attempts to start the second half and
could not recover as the Hoyas went on to take the victory. Marchanka
led the Knights
with 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Junior forward Kyle
Schmitz (Herndon, VA/Oakton) had a career-high 12 points, adding
seven rebounds in a career-high 21 minutes. Freshman forward Kay
Odenwaelder (Goshen, CT/Holy Cross) led the Knights in
rebounding in her first collegiate game with eight boards. Both teams were plagued by turnovers and struggled at the free throw line. Georgetown shot 43% for the game, while holding Fairleigh Dickinson to just 23%. The Hoyas went 7-22 from the three-point arc compared with the Knights 2-17. *
