Fairleigh Dickinson Defeats Lafayette, 86-78, in Home Opener
Marchanka rips 32 points with six treys

Hackensack, NJThe Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s basketball team (1-1) defeated the Lafayette Leopards (0-2) 86-78 in the Knights’ home opener in the Rothman Center.

The Leopards opened nine straight points on the Knights until Natallia Marchanka (Rechitsa, Belarus) got Fairleigh Dickinson on board with a three-pointer at 17:45.  Lafayette managed to open a double-digit lead, 24-14 at 10:19 at which points the Knights has a 12-point streak of their own to take the first home lead, 26-24 at 5:14.  Fairleigh Dickinson increased its lead, going into the locker room with a 42-36 margin.

The teams came out swinging after intermission and the Knights could not increase their lead further before Lafayette took the lead back, 53-52, at 11:18 on Kim Costello’s (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) only field goal of the half.  Five ties and three lead changes followed, until Marchanka hit her fifth three-pointer of the evening and gave the Knights the lead for good at 6:10, 66-63.

“We came through the first half to find a better balance to our scoring in the second half,” said head coach Sandy Gordon Gaglioti.  “To begin early in the season on a high note is a good confidence builder for our younger players.”

The Knights scored 44 points in the second half alone, two more than they scored in their season opening loss at Georgetown.  There has been only one other game in the past four seasons where Fairleigh Dickinson has scored 86 or more points, a 92-83 win over Mt. St. Mary’s last season.

Marchanka launched three treys within the first ten minutes of the game for the Knights, scoring 21 of her game-high 32 in the first session.  Three other Knights scored in double-digits including Nevin Caple (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) who tallied her first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.  Kay Odenwaelder (Goshen, CT/Holy Cross) scored 12 points while Jennifer Kozlowksi (Linwood, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) had 11.

Colleen Fitzpatrick (Springfield, PA/Acad. of Notre Dame) dominated the post for Lafayette, scoring a career-high 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting and adding a career-high tying 11 boards.  Costello was the only other Leopard to score in double-digits with 10 points.
