Fairleigh Dickinson Storms Past St. John’s, 82-52
Knights notch first win over a BIG EAST school since 1991-92

Hackensack, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University (5-3) women’s basketball team remains undefeated at home this season as they out-shot and out-rebounded the St. John’s (2-7) Red Storm for a 30-point, 82-52 victory.  The win over a BIG EAST school marks the first time for the Knights since a 71-70 victory over Seton Hall in the 1991-92 season.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 9-5 lead with the help of six points from Rasheedah Brown (Newark, NJ).  The Knights responded by scoring 16 straight points from 15:37 to 10:24, taking the 21-9 lead before going into halftime with the 38-28 margin.

Fairleigh Dickinson allowed just one field goal for the first seven minutes of the second half, rattling off a 13-2 streak and not looking back as they dominated the boards 25 to St. John’s 17 and out-shot them 44.4% to 22.2% in the second half.  On the evening the Knights shot a season-high 83.9% (26-31) from the free throw line in their third straight home win.

“It’s obviously a great win over a BIG EAST school,” says head coach of the Knights Sandy Gordon Gaglioti. “We played good team defense and had a balanced scoring effort. It was a 10-point game at halftime and our post players gave us something extra in the second half.  In the first half we relied more on our guards and when you have an inside-outside game, it’s hard to beat.”

Natallia Marchanka (Rechitsa, Belarus) led all scorers with 28 points, including a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.  She added seven assists, six rebounds and four steals in her 38 minutes.  Freshman Kanesha Wright (Somerdale, NJ) tallied her first collegiate double-double with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds, adding four blocks and three assists to her outstanding performance in the post.  Nevin Caple (Baltimore, MD) had 10 points and almost a double-double of her own with nine rebounds.

St. John’s was led by Mary Pat Statler’s (New Cumberland, WV) 15 points, including 3-of-8 three-pointers while Rasheedah Brown finished with 11 points for the Red Storm.

The Knights return to action at the Temple Classic on Sunday, December 30th and Monday, December 31st. They play Ole Miss on Sunday at 5:30pm and either Temple or UMES on Monday at 12 noon or 2:00pm
