FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON FALLS TO CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 2-1
IN KNIGHTS’ SEASON FINALE

TEANECK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson women’s soccer team (5-11, 3-7 NEC) dropped their season finale 2-1 to the visiting Blue Devils from Central Connecticut State (7-7-1, 6-2 NEC) at University Stadium.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half that saw just six shots combined.  After intermission Central Connecticut used a corner kick opportunity to get on board at 56:40 with a goal from Jenn Fischer (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park).  Three minutes later at 59:31, Kelly Shimmin (Liverpool, ENGLAND) extended the margin to 2-0 with her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a pass from Denise Thomas (Rotherham, ENGLAND).

On Fairleigh Dickinson’s lone corner opportunity, a well-placed kick to the front of the goal, was bounced between defenders and the Knights’ front line before Angela Caruso (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Ocean CC) scored her first career goal at 71:30 with a close-range shot.  The Knights hustled in the last minutes to force the ball to goal, managing two more shots before time ran down but could not catch up.

The teams each totaled eight shots on the afternoon but the Blue Devils had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage.

Fairleigh Dickinson goalkeeper Megan McDonnell (Richmond Hill, NY/Cardozo) made three saves on the afternoon while Blue Devils’ keeper Sabrina Mariani (Quebec, CANADA) made one save in 90 minutes.

The Knights have lost five games this season by a score of 2-1, including three of the team’s four overtime losses.  The Knights finish the 2001 season with three more wins than in 2000, including the program’s first three NEC wins.
