LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s
soccer team (2-7, 1-5 NEC) was edged by Monmouth (5-2-1, 2-1 NEC) 1-0
in double overtime in NEC action.
The
two teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation with minimal
scoring chances until late in the second half.
In the 54th minute the Hawks had a long shot that
slammed off the cross bar and five minutes later the Knights had their
best chance when Miranda Mignano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West)
headed a corner kick that Monmouth goalkeeper had to save with her
fingertips.
The
Knights were outshot 27-6 on the afternoon and were given two corner
kick opportunities to the Hawks’ 12.
On Monmouth’s fourth corner kick in the second overtime, the
ball was cleared out of the box back to the Hawks’ Christine Breiner
who volleyed the ball to Tricia Sellito for the game winner at 117:43.

was tested by Monmouth offense, but made nine saves in the match,
including a doorstep save five minutes into the first overtime.
“We
played a fighting battle today,” said head coach Peter Gaglioti.
“We played a good game but just didn’t score.”
The
Knights next travel to Columbia on Tuesday, October 9th for
a 7:00pm game.
